Help - Getting the Best from Our Site

We hope that our site is easy to use and you can find quickly what you want. Here is more detail on:

Moving around the site

Browse the menus to the left of the screen: the site is arranged into four main blocks, with click-able options listed underneath. The key principle of the menu is that we move from general to specific.

Suggestions of related topics  are listed under the More... heading on the right of each page.

Click on the Worklife Support logo at the top left of the screen to be taken back to the site front page.

You can see where you are in the site by looking at the crumb trail in blue towards the top of the screen. Click on the page titles in the trail to visit that page.

Use our Site Map to see all the key areas of the site on one page. Then click on the page you want.

You may be shown links to other pages, both on our site and elsewhere on the web. Such links are shown by having a word or phrase in blue and underlined, as is usually the case with websites. All links to external sites will open a new browser window.

You can also use the Search box.

Search tips

The search box always appears at the top right of the screen. Simply type a term in the box and click on the arrow. You should get a list of pages or documents as your results.

Click on the page title to go to that page. If you click on a document - recognisable from the fact is will give a document file extension (e.g. PDF) and a file size - the document will start to download.

Use the Back button on your browser to return to the search list.

A simple trick when looking at such a list is to hold down the shift key when clicking on a title. This opens the link in a new Window or Tab. You close the Window when you're done and still have the search results easily available.

To truncate your search term - so searching on teacher will also find the term teachers – use an asterisk (teacher*)

Downloading

Items that are not suitable for reading online are made available for downloading. It is very difficult to say how long a document will take to download, but the better your connection, the faster the download. If you think that the download is taking too long, stop and start again.

None of the documents on this site should take long than a minute to download.

To open the document, click on the link and you will be prompted to open or save the document to your computer.

If you do not wish, or for some reason you are not able to download these documents, please contact us and we will post the requested document to you.

Virtually all the material we offer for downloading is in Portable Document Format (PDF), the web standard for such documents. You will need a PDF reader, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, or Foxit, both of which are free.

Some downloads will be in Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint formats. You will need to have software installed to edit the documents but you can download Word and PowerPoint Viewers from the Microsoft web site.

Larger documents, or collections of documents, may be compressed into a single zipped file. This file can be downloaded but will then need to be unzipped or decompressed once on your computer. This functionality comes as standard on most computers, but you can use specialist software, such as Winzip or 7-ZIP.

You should be aware that all material posted on the site has been checked for viruses, but you should re-check any download, from this or any other site, just to make sure. Contact Worklife Support or your own IT support if you want any further help in this area.
