With evidence mounting that headteachers are a particularly vulnerable group in terms of wellbeing and work-life balance, Worklife Support established Headspace - a unique, face-to-face development programme for small groups of leaders.
National data from our Well-Being Programme survey as well as our experience in schools and local authorities across the UK indicate that school leaders are feeling a great deal of pressure.
“Headspace has taken away some of the isolation
and loneliness a head can feel.”

We all know that work overload can provoke a decline in motivation and performance. In the case of leaders, however, it is also likely to limit their ability to carry out the crucial strategic parts of their role.
The Headspace programme offers leaders:
- the resources they need to improve their resilience and work more effectively
- a safe and confidential framework within which they can reflect together on the practical issues of leadership and develop robust, creative and sustainable strategies
- the chance to enhance their capacity to work in a complex, constantly changing environment, facing challenges with optimism and creativity
- Additional support through a dedicated EAP.
Each Headspace programme is shaped entirely by the individual group of leaders. The Worklife Support facilitator focuses on the specific concerns and interests of the small group and helps to keep the sessions on track.
Headspace helps both new and experienced heads to rediscover their deeply-held values and sustain their enthusiasm and commitment for the work they do.
“All the sessions have been helpful – offering solutions, sharing expertise, having independent listeners, supported by professional examples and leadership/change/management theory. Headspace is an opportunity to reflect in a non-judgemental environment with trusted colleagues.”
